With The Bulldog Pub & Grill undergoing renovations, our Rotary meeting took a fun detour to The Fisherman Fish & Chips. A heartfelt thank you to Kyle and his team for welcoming us so warmly, great food and even better company!

We were honoured to host Jacqueline Vieira from the Durham Children’s Aid Foundation as our guest speaker. She shared the incredible impact their team has through programs like Holiday Hope, post-secondary bursaries, and Dream, Dare, Do, all designed to uplift vulnerable youth in our region.

The room was full of fellowship, learning, and laughter, proof that sometimes a change of scenery is just what we need.

Helping Bowmanville Fire Victims with Nutritious Meals

Last week’s fire in downtown Bowmanville was devastating,
displacing multiple families and leaving them in a difficult situation. In times like these, community support makes all the difference. We wanted to do more than just offer temporary relief, we wanted to ensure those affected have access to healthy, nourishing meals to help them recover and stay strong.

That’s where Justin from Healthy at Home 905 comes in. Based in Bowmanville, Healthy at Home 905 is known for its high-quality, fridge-and freezer-friendly meals, designed to make healthy eating easy and delicious. After visiting the motel where displaced residents are staying, Justin personally stepped up to provide nutritious, home-style meals at cost, ensuring they get fresh, balanced food instead of relying on fast food or snacks.

And just look at the meals Justin has already provided! Fresh, hearty, and made with care, this is exactly the kind of nourishment these families need right now. 🍲🥗

Rotary Club Axe Throwing Night Recap – Warning: Don’t Mess with Our Club!

Last night, we took over Volt Raceway, kicking things off with some seriously good pizza from Eddie’s. Then it was time for axe throwing—and let’s just say, this group of Rotarians is a force to be reckoned with!

We were landing bullseyes left and right, surprising even ourselves. If you ever thought about messing with our club, you might want to think again! Plus, Volt's innovative projection overlay on the targets was next-level cool. The interactive games kept us on our toes and took the whole experience up a notch. None of us had seen anything quite like it!

At our latest Rotary Club meeting, we were honored to welcome Vonnette from the Charles H Best Diabetes Centre in Brooklin, Ontario. Vonnette shared important insights about the vital work the Centre does to support patients living with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).

We were also privileged to hear from Alex and her mother, Amy, who gave a heartfelt and personal account of discovering Alex’s diagnosis of T1D and how it has impacted her life. Their story of strength and resilience reminded us of the importance of awareness, education, and support for individuals managing chronic health conditions like T1D.

The Charles H Best Diabetes Centre offers essential care without fees, helping people of all ages manage Type 1 Diabetes, and we are proud to help raise awareness of their amazing work in the community!

What a fantastic day we had at the ballpark! Today, 35 Rotarians and friends took a chartered school bus from Courtice to the Rogers Centre to watch the Toronto Blue Jays take on the Los Angeles Angels. It was a day filled with excitement, camaraderie, and, most importantly, generosity.

Thanks to the amazing spirit of our Rotarians and friends, we were able to raise over $700 on the way to the game! The funds raised will go towards supporting our ongoing community projects and initiatives.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to making this day a success. Smiles all around for our group, as we enjoyed a thrilling game and created wonderful memories together. Here’s to more such events in the future! Go Jays Go!

We were honored to have Steve Rutledge as our guest speaker this week, updating us on his incredible project, "Adopt a Village in Laos." Steve, a dedicated Rotarian from the Whitby Sunrise club, shared his inspiring work in Laos, where he has been making a significant impact for over a decade.

Steve founded Adopt a Village in Laos to address the severe lack of clean water and sanitation in rural Laotian communities. Through his efforts, the project has completed over 65 villages with filtered water, built permanent water supplies, and constructed numerous hygienic toilet banks. His work has brought health and happiness to over 40,000 Laotians, significantly improving their quality of life.

One of the most touching aspects of his presentation was hearing about the community involvement in these projects. Villagers participate in constructing dams, pipelines, and water tanks, fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment. Additionally, the project includes providing feminine hygiene products, which has greatly improved school attendance for girls in these communities.

Steve's dedication goes beyond just infrastructure; he also focuses on education and hygiene training, ensuring the sustainability of these improvements. His efforts have not only provided immediate relief but have also laid the groundwork for long-term health and prosperity in these villages.

We thank Steve for sharing his journey and for his unwavering commitment to making a difference. His work is a powerful reminder of the impact that dedicated individuals can have on global communities.

This Wednesday, our Rotary Club took a road trip to the Allison Funeral Home in Port Hope, ON. Our newest member, Melissa Allison, graciously invited us to hold our meeting at her family’s funeral home. Melissa, along with her protégé Ashley, set up the space as it would be for a standard funeral and gave us an insightful presentation about her career as a funeral director.

During her classification talk, Melissa shared the responsibilities and requirements of her role, providing us with a deeper understanding of the profession. Her talk was informative, engaging, and filled with humor, making it a memorable experience for everyone.

We enjoyed a delicious dinner from the Schnitzel Shack in Port Hope, adding a tasty culinary highlight to our evening. We concluded the night with a private tour of the funeral home, guided by Melissa and Ashley. To top off the night, we savored a thematically appropriate cake from Keira at 7k Bakery, which added a sweet touch to our unique and enlightening meeting.

At this Wednesday's Rotary meeting, we had the pleasure of inducting Melissa Allison into the membership of our Rotary Club. Melissa's enthusiasm and dedication to community service are already evident, and we are excited to see the positive impact she will bring to our club and the broader community.

Last night at the Rotary Club of Courtice, we had an inspiring meeting featuring Grey Brett, who shared his remarkable journey as a liver transplant recipient and his achievements as a competitive swimmer in the Transplant Games. Diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis in 2005, Grey received a lifesaving liver transplant in June 2015. Since then, he has dedicated his life to promoting organ donation and healthy living for transplant recipients. Grey has competed in multiple World Transplant Games, setting several world records and showcasing the incredible capabilities of transplant recipients

Additionally, we had the pleasure of inducting Mellissa Murphy as a new member of our club. We are thrilled to welcome her and look forward to the contributions she will bring to our community.

🎉 Huge congratulations to our very own Marie and Ferd for their outstanding recognition at the Municipality of Clarington Volunteer Awards! 🎉

Ferd received the prestigious Clarington Mayor’s Office Challenge Coin, a symbol of appreciation from the Mayor for residents who have significantly impacted our community. Ferd’s efforts in volunteering, advocacy, and education have not only enriched our community but have also set a high standard of civic engagement.

We also want to remember Sheila Hall, a former president of the Rotary Club of Courtice and a distinguished member of our community. Sheila's legacy of service and leadership continues to inspire our efforts and reminds us of the profound impact dedicated individuals can have.

Marie has been honored as Volunteer of the Year, a testament to her tireless dedication and impactful contributions to our community. Her leadership in various initiatives, from fundraising to organizing community events, has truly made a difference in the lives of many. During the ceremony, Marie's son, Connor, delivered a moving speech about her deservingness of this award.

"It is an absolute honor to speak today about a remarkable individual, Marie Visser my mother, whose dedication to service transcends Rotary and deeply impacts our broader community.

Marie’s ethos of service was instilled early by her father, Earl, who taught her the value of taking responsibility for the welfare of her community. This foundational principle has guided her through numerous impactful endeavors.

Marie’s contributions are wide-ranging and profound:

In her Rotary career alone, Marie has led with distinction, serving as President three times and as Treasurer for six years. Her leadership didn't stop at administrative roles; she was also a dynamic New Generations Chair for ten years. Here, she nurtured young minds, preparing them to be tomorrow’s leaders, and she has served on the district committee for youth services, extending her influence and insights regionally.

Through education as Chair of the Parent Involvement Committee and Regional School Council for the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, she influenced educational policies and fostered significant engagement in our schools from 2009 to 2020.

In healthcare inspired by personal connections, she has been pivotal in fundraising for Sick Kids Hospital and Grandview Children’s Centre, organizations that provided life-changing care to young Scott, whose resilience in the face of medical challenges inspired Marie further.

To support our community Marie has organized substantial financial and volunteer resources, raising over $500,000 to various local and international causes. This includes significant support to:

We recently had the privilege of sharing a special moment with a remarkable group of local seniors at Faith United Church. For several years now, these seniors have gathered every other Monday to enjoy a game of Euchre, share in delightful conversations, and savor delicious desserts prepared by the Faith UCW.

In the spirit of the holiday season, the Rotary Club of Courtice decided to add a little extra cheer to their gathering. On Monday, December 11th, our team arrived early to surprise the participants. In a gesture of community spirit and festive goodwill, we covered the admission fees for everyone, allowing them to enjoy their beloved Euchre afternoon on us.

We were thrilled to be able to donate $1000 worth of pet products to the Clarington Animal Shelter last week. Shelters in our area are full of animals needing to be adopted. Everything from bunnies to cats and dogs. Therefore shelters are in need of products that enhance the lives of the animals currently living with them. The Clarington Animal Shelter received everything from food, toys, leashes, collars, water bowls and blankets.

Rotarian Spenser Visser has been growing his hair for 18 months and is now cutting it to benefit WIGS FOR KIDS CANADA. Never missing an opportunity to do something great for his community Spenser will be getting his haircut on Thursday June 22 2023.

Wigs For Kids Canada makes wigs for children who have lost their hair due to Chemo, Radiation, Alopecia, burns, etc. Wigs are sturdy enough for kids to be involved in physical activity such as team sports and swimming. They are all handmade with care for a child who may otherwise not be able to receive one.

Along with the donation of hair, it costs $1800 to assemble a wig. The goal of the Rotary Club of Courtice is to raise the $1800 or more and provide a wig(s) for a child(ren) who needs one.

Thank you to The Kingsmen - Barbers on King in Courtice owner Steve Grimley for partnering with us in cutting the hair for donation.

We hope you will donate as an individual or as a Rotary Club to this great cause and be prepared to see Spenser with his brand new hairdo!

Another Back To School Backpack round up is complete for this 2022/23 school year. With your support the Rotary Club of Courtice and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Courtice Chapter, successfully packed 34 backpacks for students in Courtice ranging from Junior Kindergarten to grade 12.

The only thing better than providing free ice cream treats to the Gathering Place group home residents in Bowmanville, is being able to do it twice in as many months. We were thrilled to present Courtice Pharmasave owner Elaine Dias with a Paul Harris Fellow today. Since joining our Courtice Community she has supported countless organizations and offered a hand up to all who need it. Her pandemic response to protect our most vulnerable and medically compromised community members was phenomenal. Thank you Elaine for giving us the best of you and congratulations, you are so deserving!

The Rotary Club of Courtice celebrated it's 20th anniversary at the Newcastle Community Hall. It was a fantastic evening raising $3000 for Durham Region Hospice Clarington, $3000 for Safe Hope Home and the 50/50 brought in over $900 for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Sixteen Paul Harris Fellowships were awarded for outstanding service to the community and the club.

Best part of being a Rotarian, is the spreading of joy and the ability to reach out to our local, international and global communities to offer a hand up to those who need it. We took toys yesterday to the DRPS Toy Drive and a truck full of food to the Clarington East Food Bank today. Wishing you all a happy and heathy celebration.

We were thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Ontario Shores once again this holiday season. Members of the club were on hand this morning delivering 75 blankets and quilts for three Geriatric Units as well as Holiday Hope Hero Christmas gift bags for patients on the Complex General Psychiatry Unit C. This unit holds a special place in the heart of our Past President Shannon Lavigne as this is the unit she stayed on when hospitalized at Ontario Shores in the Spring of 2021. Special thanks to the wonderful volunteers who knit, crocheted and quilted our donated blankets - we couldn't have done it without you. To everyone who participated in our Epicure fundraiser - thank you. You have helped make these gift bags happen. We are so proud to be a part of such an amazing community.

Our member elves were busy this morning decorating Autism Home Base. We were able to buy them all new decorations and put them up to brighten the holidays. Special shout out to Theresa Gamble for taking the lead on this project and doing all the shopping ♥️

The Rotary Club of Courtice laid a wreath at the Bowmanville Remembrance Day Ceremony -- here are some pictures from the parade and ceremony. #lestweforget2021

Today we were able to plant a tree at Tooley's Mill Park Courtice, in memory of Peter Ellinas of Johannesburg South Africa. Peter, the father of Courtice Rotarian Theresa Gamble, passed away on May 18 of this year. His example is what has inspired Theresa to be such an active and engaged member of our community. We look forward to making many community memories around Peter's tree and we are thrilled to plant more "community roots" for Theresa and her family.

A tree has roots in the soil yet reaches to the sky. It tells us that in order to aspire we need to be grounded and no matter how high we go it is from our roots that we draw sustenance.

As many of you are aware the Rotary Club of Courtice has ran several successful Lap Blanket programs for Durham Region area hospitals and health facilities. Recently we were contacted by Anne Cawker, a member of the Ganaraska Quilt Guild to receive and distribute quilted lap blankets. We humbly accepted the offer and are pleased to have presented our first of many today to Marie Oryshak who will be turning 103 in July. Since the Covid-19 Pandemic started Marie has been unable to move about to attend her day programs and social activities but has been able to adapt to zoom programs. We hope you enjoy your Purple (her favourite colour) blanket for many years to come.

President BRAG ALERT...So very proud of my Courtice Rotarians and our community partners who jumped in to assist Sunnycrest Nursing Home over the last week. In an effort to free up beds within the Lakeridge Health system Sunnycrest has been admitting long-term care patients from hospital. Upon arrival patients must isolate in their rooms for 14 days before being integrated, which is a long lonely process, so we provided them with some isolation activities to help pass the time.
Well done everyone and thank you!

We were thrilled to distribute 138 hand knit hats to the Neonatal Unit this morning. They had zero left and through the generosity of the Clarington Community we solved that problem. A big shout out to 80 year Geraldine who provided the majority of today's delivery. Thank you Rotarian Elspeth Theriault for arranging and making the delivery today!

A huge thank you to our community for the overwhelming support for our lap blanket initiative. In 24 hours we have far exceeded our goal of 30 blankets!

As of now we have closed this request but we will repost when we are ready to open up for more assistance with this great cause.

We believe, having a blanket to call their own is a small thing we can do. Working in conjunction with our community partners (this means you), we are looking to create 30 blankets. Once created, they will be donated to individual patients to have and keep during the course of their illness, treatment and recovery.

We are able to porch drop 3 balls of wool for you to create a 36X48 inch (3X4 foot) lap blanket. Once completed, blankets will be picked up from you. You never have to even leave your house. Campaign will run until February 26 2021.

If you’re interested in putting your knitting or crocheting skills to the test, we ask that you consider joining us in this worthwhile endeavour.

This is a fantastic way for our club to close out 2020. Rotarian Elspeth Theriault delivered these 16 handmade lap blankets to the R. S. McLaughlin Cancer Centre at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, to be distributed to patients fighting Cancer. We would like to thank all the knitters and crocheters who selflessly dedicate their time and resources to creating these amazing gifts of love and kindness!

A few weeks ago, we delivered lap blankets for patients at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, where we learned of their Patient Gift Giving Program. This program was initiated because their patients that would normally return home for the holidays are unable to this year due to the Covid-19 infection risk. Our club members Theresa Gamble, Shannon Lavigne, Spenser Visser and Marie Visser sprang into action and with the help of the club, executed an online silent auction...once again our community responded. We raised almost $1000 and were able to provide 25 gift bags one for each patient in the Complex General Psychiatry Unit.
From the bottom of our hearts we want to thank everyone who participated or donated to this fabulous initiative. Wishing you all a happy and safe holiday!

Exactly two weeks ago today we put out a call to our wonderful community asking for knitters and crocheters to create lap blankets for patients at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences and did you ever answer... 34 lap blankets in 10 days! President Connor Visser and Rotarian Sharon Davidson were thrilled to represent our club and community, to deliver the beautiful blankets to Andrea Marshall (Director of Communications, Volunteer Services and CEOD) and Sharon Hudson-Alipanopoulos (Volunteer Coordinator). Thank you Clarington for your fantastic response to our request you are very much appreciated for your kindness!

President Connor got to play Santa today delivering a $1500 donation to Betty Carr for the St. Vincent de Paul, Courtice Food Bank on behalf of our club. Additionally several Rotarians contributed personal donations to add $350 to the club's donation.

It has become obvious that COVID-19 represents a serious global health crisis and requires everyone to do their part to slow its progress. As members of the community, we believe part of our responsibility is to protect the safety of all Rotarians, Community Members, Our Community Partners and their families.
With this in mind, we have chosen to temporarily suspend all Rotary Club of Courtice meetings and events until April 20, 2020. We will continue to monitor the situation and look forward to getting together, once the situation stabilizes and we are advised it is safe to do so.

The Rotary Club of Courtice Egg-cellent Easter Hunt, which was to be held on April 11, 2020 has been cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 concerns. As it is impossible to know what will happen in the next weeks and months, we as a club believe that keeping our community members safe is of the utmost importance. As such we look forward to working on new engaging community activities and will present them here on Facebook when plans are secured.

Had a fantastic time last night at the Bowmanville Lions Club/Bowmanville Rotary Club Elimination Draw Dinner. While the big winner didn’t end up being from our club we cheered to the very end, devoured the very best pie in Ontario and placed side bets and table bets with anyone we could convince. A fantastic evening and we can’t wait for next year.

What a great morning having Bruce Rutherford from the Lunch Buddies Program join us for our Friday meeting. It was terrific hearing what’s new with the program and what’s still to come. Looking forward to the BBQ!

GREAT time this evening at the Birch Bistro for our Rotary and friends “Galaxy in the Pines” PaintNite event. Tonight we spent time with fellow Rotarians, met new friends and painted with abandon. Added to that we raised money for wonderful community causes. Thanks to everyone who joined us.

In addition to having many Courtice Rotary members in the parade, we are proud to announce that we sold over 1000 parade buttons this year at the Courtice Santa Claus Parade. All the proceeds will be used to assist with the cost of next year's parade.
A big thank you goes out to the Clarington Ravens who came out to help us sell buttons.

We were happy to have Larry Shanks of SafeHope Home visit us yesterday evening. Larry spoke about the sexual exploitation and trafficking crisis affecting the GTA, specifically Durham Region and all the great work SafeHope Home is doing for these victims.

We remember!

How truly honoured we were to have Leanne Foster, Lala and Zena from Trafalgar School and the A World of Difference program. Lala and Zena are courageous, exceptional young women and it was a privilege to meet them and hear them speak. Their compelling stories, wit and warmth made us all take pause and see Canada through their eyes. We are thrilled to support A World of Difference and look forward to a lasting relationship between the Rotary Club of Courtice and Trafalgar School/A World of Difference.

So happy to have the Clarington Ravens come back and visit us. Last year they started their organization with a Novice team (girls aged 13-14) and they did very well for a first year team. This year they have a Bantam (girls 15-16), Novice (girls 13-14) and a Squirt (girls 11-12) team! Way to go Ravens we look forward to supporting you again this year!

Several of our members had the privilege of attending the Bowmanville Rotary Club meeting this morning to celebrate 10 years of working with the Mattawa Education Centre in Thunder Bay. Honoring Rotarian Dr. Ted Mann for his commitment to this project and now being overseen by our friend Georg Krohn, their club has provided over $80,000 in bursaries and scholarships to First Nation students.
Congratulations fellow Rotarians you are extraordinary people!

Our President recently wrote an article for ‘The Spotlight’, The Ontario Shores inaugural donor newsletter. In it she talks about her struggle with mental illness, ongoing recovery and the part Ontario Shores has played in that. The club donated $5000 to Ontario Shores this Spring with a portion of the donation going directly to the unit that cared for her. Just one more reason why we are all proud to be Rotarians.

What a great afternoon celebrating the Grand Opening of THE LOFT - Courtice Youth Centre. We spoke with lots of familiar faces, got to hear the amazing singing talents from one of the youth and got to hear about the successes already made. Congratulations to The LOFT! We are thrilled there is a safe space for youth in our community to spend their time. Now how about a game of pool?

Looking for something to do tomorrow? Come out to Alexander Park at 12pm to cheer on the Clarington Ravens Bantam girls coached by Rotarian Marie Visser, in their first exhibition game against the Oshawa Shamrocks!

A great evening was had at The Gathering Place for the Rotary Club of Courtice sponsored barbecue dinner. We helped serve over 100 people a delicious meal and fantastic dessert. Thank you Gathering Place for having us.

Rotarians, Interactors and Friends of Rotary have been busy baking delicious goodies for the Interact Bake Sale at the Big Brothers Big Sisters Harvest Tea tomorrow, Saturday September 15. All money raised is being donated back to Big Brothers Big Sisters. We are proud of our Interactors and thank everyone who has supported their endeavour with delicious baking.

We are looking forward to the Harvest Tea, visiting with old friends, meeting new ones and supporting a wonderful organization.

What a night! The club was thrilled to have the opportunity to honour three amazing individuals with our ‘Family and Community Service Award’ yesterday evening. Jack Coffin, Logan McPherson and Steve Rutledge are three individuals we are so happy to call Friends of the club. Their individual work within their community, raising funds and awareness for charities and organizations they believe in as well as showing themselves to be exemplary individuals makes us proud to present them with these awards. Congratulations to the three of you. Thank you for all that you do to make your community a better place!

We were happy to be the sponsor of the Saint Vincent de Paul Backpack Drive this year. We had fun working together amassing all the school supplies and helping fill the backpacks. We wish all students and their families a happy and safe Back to School.

On Friday the club was proud to present a donation of $5000 to Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences. This money has been earmarked for two of the many important units at the hospital, Transitional Aged Youth and Neuropsychiatry. We look forward to working with Ontario Shores again and thank them for the incredible work they do in our community.

Our club donated 3 uniform kits and our Interact Club of Clarington president Austin Bonke presented their donation of 1 uniform kit. We look forward to attending a game and cheering them on! Special thanks to our other guests who traveled in from Cobourg and Whitby to join us!
